Get Your Landscaping Business Ready for Spring Now

Use the cooler months to get ahead

Once the days start getting cooler and shorter, lawns and landscaping need less maintenance, even in regions that don’t experience snowfall during the winter. This makes the cooler months a difficult time for businesses that rely on green plants to make their green. Instead of packing up and waiting for spring, there are tasks you can do in the off-season to plan ahead for the year to come and might lead to even more green in the future.

How to use the slower months to get ahead

The grass may not be growing, but that doesn’t mean you need to go into hibernation. The off-season offers a prime opportunity for landscaping businesses to prepare, strategize, and set the stage for stronger growth when business picks back up. Here are a few ways you can prepare.

Upgrade & maintain your equipment

Working long, hot days can take a toll on your gear. The off-season is the perfect time to catch up on maintenance. While you’re not using your tools and equipment, give them the attention they need to be ready for spring.

  • Lawnmowers: It’s a good idea to change your oil and filter every year, and the off-season is a great time to do it. Lawnmowers also need a fuel filter change and spark plugs every so often, depending on what your user manual says. Check any belts for wear and tear, and replace them if you need to. You might also check your blades. They get worn out and sometimes come loose. If your blades are in good shape, but dull from repeated use, go ahead and sharpen them.

  • Trimmers: Trimmers need more than new line. Anything with an engine needs regular maintenance, and that includes trimmers. Replace the oil and any filters or spark plugs in the off-season, to keep them trimming right.

  • Bladed tools: Keep your bladed tools sharp so they’ll cut more efficiently. Whatever your tool, you can find a sharpener for it.

  • Chainsaws: Chainsaw blades need sharpening, too. They could also benefit from engine maintenance in the off-season.

  • Leaf blowers: Just like your lawnmowers, your leaf blowers need engine maintenance. You might also check them for frayed pull ropes and clogged air filters. Also check the air nozzle to make sure it’s not clogged.

The off-season is also a good time to look at making upgrades. Sometimes a new tool can be more efficient than the old ones. You work hard, so should your tools. If a new tool can help you work faster and better, it might save you money in the long run.

Review sales data to plan for next year

In the regular season, you may be too busy working to take a long look at your books. That’s okay, the cooler months should give you the time you need to analyze the health of your business.

Take a look at how much money came in and how much of that money went back out. What did you spend, and what did you spend it on?

Walmart Business+ members can use Spend Analytics to easily track their spending. Knowing where your money went last season can help you make a plan for the next. And you might even spot places where you can cut back, or spend more efficiently.

Order supplies now

Whether it's seeds and fertilizer to make the grass grow or trash bags to hold the clippings, you go through a lot of supplies in the regular season. Why wait until you run out to stock up?

Once you’ve analyzed your spending, you’ll have a good idea of how much or what supplies you used last season. That will give you an idea of how much you should plan to have on hand for next season.

Walmart Business customers can stock up with bulk buys on items like soil, weed trimmer spools or bottled water for the crew. And with multi-user accounts and shared payment options, you can delegate ordering to a member of your team while you stay on top of spending.

Update your marketing

The slow period is also a good time to update your marketing. Go ahead and start that social media account you’ve always thought about. Update your details in search engines. Respond to reviews. And plan ahead for the upcoming season with updated posters, flyers and signs.
