Walmart Business Success Stories: Moon Mountain Sanctuary & Rescue

Embracing the chaos of saving animals

There's one non-profit organization dedicated to saving as many of the approximately 200,000 unwanted horses in the US as possible: Moon Mountain Sanctuary & Rescue.

“The thing about running a non-profit that rescues horses is you have to embrace the chaos,” says Dawn Olivieri, actress and founder of Moon Mountain Sanctuary & Rescue. For help embracing the chaos, she turns to Walmart Business.

Olivieri is an actress and star of television shows such as “House of Lies,” “Yellowstone” and “1883.” She’s also a rancher who owns an animal sanctuary in Mena, Arkansas. During the 2023 SAG/AFTRA strike in Hollywood, Olivieri retreated to her ranch to surround herself with greenery and animals. She had no plans to adopt more animals, but, thanks to a social media post about horses at risk, she soon became involved in a social media campaign to rescue 50 abandoned horses.

“Suddenly, I found myself raising enough donations for roughly 50 horses, thanks to an army of amazing people through Instagram,” Olivieri told Four States Living in 2023.

Within months, Olivieri had founded Moon Mountain, a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization devoted to finding safe, comfortable homes for all kinds of animals. Naturally, with so many mouths to feed and care for, Moon Mountain needs a lot of supplies. That’s why they rely on Walmart Business.

“We do a lot of bulk ordering,” says Olivieri. “So to be able to get everything that we need in one place in the quantities that we need has been a huge time-saver.”

From feed to fencing wire, Moon Mountain saves time, money and hassle shopping with Walmart Business. For anything they need right away, Dawn and her team can simply visit their local store, where Dawn is a local hero—everybody at the store knows her name. Moon Mountain is also a non-profit organization, which means Dawn and her team enjoy an extra benefit from shopping at Walmart Business.

“Our tax-exempt status easily applies,” says Olivieri. When she shops at the local store, her non-profit status is applied at checkout, either by an associate, manually in the self-checkout or in the Walmart Business app. Eligible organizations like Moon Mountain can also shop tax-free online. With Walmart Business, Olivieri spends less time shopping for supplies and more time caring for the animals who call Moon Mountain home. Watch the full video to learn more about how Walmart Business helps Moon Mountain keep its animals safe and comfortable.
